Coordinates The World Museum of Mining is a museum and memorial in Butte, Montana Chartered in 1964 as a non-profit educational corporation, the Museum first opened its doors in July 1965. The site, an inactive silver and zinc mine named the Orphan Girl, includes 50 buildings on some 22 acres of land. For the first time in Butte’s history those who lost their life in a mining, mill/smelter, concentrator, or railroad accident are memorialized at the World Museum of Mining. Four memorial walls, constructed of polished black granite slabs, are sandblasted with the names of over 2,500 men that lost their lives in the Silver Bow Mining District since 1865.

World Museum of Mining General Admission With 50 exhibit buildings, countless artifacts, and 66 primary exhibits in the mine yard, you can spend from a couple of hours to an entire day lost in the unfolding story. The World Museum of Mining is one of the few museums in the world located on an actual mine yard – the Orphan Girl Mine. The "Girl" is the centerpiece of the Museum and is marked by a 100 foot high steel headframe. Once mined to a depth of 3200 feet, she produced silver, lead and zinc from 1875 until 1956.
